Definition of USB flash memory drives

USB Flash Drives are NAND-type flash memory data storage devices integrated with a USB interface. These are essentially devices that are removable & rewritable for the user. These are ideally suited to people on the move who have a large number of documents that require frequent access. The memory capacity of these devices has been icnreasing steadily ove the last few years. The first ones manufactured by IBM held only 8mb, now we have capacities of 4gb. The size is limited by the flash memory densities. The standard sizes for retail sales are: 256mb, 512mb, 1gb, 2gb, 4gb. Promotional USB is still available down to 32mb.

The success and growth of USB Flash Drives is a result of the clear advantages that is has over other storage devices, in particular:

  • Holds more data
  • More reliable than many types of storage, as typically no moving parts.
  • Faster access to the content
  • Are supported natively by most operating systems, and cane be directly attached to a hardware device
  • Portable and easily to transport as they are so small and compact
  • No external power source is required
