Blu-ray compliant PS3 is 'selling well'
The PlayStation 3 is selling really well, Sony's chief executive has said.
Howard Stringer claims that the unit's current performance is comparable with sales of its predecessor the PS2 - despite the fact that market commentators have claimed that its latest unit is not as popular as the PS2.
But Mr Stringer says that the popularity of the new model can't effectively be gauged at this early stage and that the festive period will be a very lucrative time for the PS3.
"The momentum shift and the energy behind PS3 in time for Christmas is extremely fortuitous," the Sony chief said in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.
"It was planned by the Playstation group but I think this momentum now, particularly the number of games coming out including our own as well as third party, is the same as it was with Playstation 2.
"(The PS3 is) not behind the curve compared to Playstation 2 in terms of momentum. The amount of bandwidth and the processing power of Cell gives game manufacturers a lot more work to do to use this system to its full benefit and it's taken a while to do it. The same was true of the PlayStation 2."
