UK set for cut price HD DVD player

A low cost HD DVD player, manufactured in China by Venturer, is set to hit the UK market place shortly after Christmas.

The SHD7001 player, which sold in the US for just $198 (£98), will be available domestically from December 29th.

In addition, European HD DVD Promotional Group will be offering five free discs with the system, which will include Hollywood blockbusters Hulk and Troy, Pocketlint reports.

A spokesman for the European HD DVD revealed that the company was excited to offer such a venture for UK consumers.

He said: "We're committed to ensuring that the HD DVD is the best value format for consumers and as such, we're delighted to be able to offer an amazing five disc free campaign to the Venturer HD DVD player promotion on QVC."

Meanwhile, according to a survey by Home Media magazine, HD TV viewers favour HD DVDs over the Blu-ray format by 43 per cent to 27 per cent.
