Sony improve Blu-ray manufacturing process

Sony has improved its Blu-ray manufacturing process with the development of a new laser module which could bring high-definition content to more consumers.

Working with Japanese firm Nichi, Sony has produced a Blu-ray laser unit just three millimetres thick with the product set to be used in the firm's range of popular laptop computers, Current.com.au reports.

The process will make the manufacturing of Blu-ray readers and writers easier and cheaper, allowing the company to bring new low-cost drives to the marketplace.

However, there are currently no plans to use the new laser products in traditional Blu-ray players and recorders, although a decision might be taken when mass production begins later in the year.

Meanwhile, Blu-ray has been enjoying a massive boost in popularity across Australia.

According to news.com.au, sales figures in the country are encouraging the format to increase its DVD manufacturing efforts to meet a continued rise in demand.
