Microsoft cuts price of Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on

In the wake of Blu-ray's triumph in the high-definition format war, Microsoft has reduced the price of its HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360.

The software and games console giant has dropped the cost of the add-on from $179.99 (£92) in the US to just $129.99 (£67).

This reduction will also be effective in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

However, it is not yet known whether a similar price cut will be made in Britain. A spokesperson told Absolute Gadget that there are "no announcements to date of the price drop coming to the UK or Europe".

The Xbox 360 add-on is bundled with five free HD DVDs.

The price cut comes in the wake of Toshiba's decision to reduce the price of several of its HD DVD players.

Microsoft released the Xbox 360 in the UK in 2005. It is available in three different versions: the Elite, the Arcade and the Premium.
