Copy protection cracking 'could aid HD-DVD'

Troubled high-definition format HD-DVD could be granted a reprieve with the news that its competitor, Blu-ray, has had its copy protection system cracked.

Such is the assertion of software provider SlySoft, which notes that the format has recently been rendered unprotected by programs capable of evading its copying restrictions.

As a result, chief executive officer Giancarlo Bettini argues that DVD duplication providers could opt for HD-DVD as an alternative secure method of distributing media.

"One or more film studios may want to reconsider their withdrawal from HD-DVD," he comments.

However, he notes that the ability to duplicate Blu-ray discs for backup purposes is likely to be welcomed among consumers concerned about the limitations put in place by copy protection.

SlySoft's DVD duplication software includes facilities to replicate a disc with changes made without the need to rip the entire content to a computer.

Instead, an xml file is used to list the changes which must be made and these are incorporated into the resultant disc image by the software.
